Winnipeg to allow Google to access real-time traffic info

As a Winnipeger, I found this news to be pretty cool. When driving around, I’ll sometimes have Google Maps running on my Nexus 6P to help give me an idea of how traffic is along the way. The only real information I get though, it if a route is fast or slow. No reasons why.

Waze is an app by Google that provides more detailed information, such as police check stops, traffic accidents, construction, road closures, and more. I once gave the app a try a long time ago, but it didn’t appear to work well here – and now it is clear why. Google never had the proper kind of access it needed other than a user base reporting traffic info themselves.

The managers of City Transportation are looking for the council’s approval to allow Google to access this info from the transportation management centre and public works crews.
